The fear of contracting breast cancer is so high amongst most women that the very feel of anything close to a lump in the breast makes one anxious. However, lack of complete knowledge can sometimes cause unnecessary stress on the issue. Therefore, it may be a wise idea to gain know-how about the breast tissue in general and the symptoms of breast cancer.
The breast area fundamentally comprises of two types of tissues namely; gland tissue and fatty tissue. Gland tissue exists primarily in the upper outer area of the breasts and is lumpy and firm in touch. On the other hand, the fatty tissue is located in the lower and inside areas of the breast. These tissues feel extremely soft. The nature of the breast tissue tends to vary with age and also alters during various times of the month owing to certain fluctuations in the hormonal levels of the body.
A lump that may indicate towards malignancy could seem like a pea shaped structure, which although hard in touch may not cause any pain. Such a lump feels quite different from the regular fatty or glandular tissues. If you feel the emergence of such a lump, then monitor its growth at regular intervals. Sometimes, it may vanish with the onset of the next menstrual cycle. In case, otherwise it is advisable to consult a doctor. Some of the other symptoms of a malignant lump include a lump that grows in size and hardness, oozing of blood from the nipples, alteration in the skin texture of the breast skin and sudden inversion of nipples. In the presence of any of these signs, a doctor may conduct a physical examination followed by scans, mammography or biopsy to make the correct diagnosis. However, remember that statistics highlight that 4 out of 5 lumps turn out to be benign and are mere harmless cysts.
