Is A Breast Cancer Lump Painful ?

Breast cancer is one of the most common forms of malignancy in women. Breast cancer is characterized by the presence of enlarged nodes that feel like lumps. As a consequence of the malignancy, the lining of the milk ducts tends to get inflamed, thereby making the area soft and painful. However, it must be noted that all cancerous lumps may not be painful.

At the same time, formation of lumps in the breast could also occur due to regular hormonal fluctuations in the female body. Therefore, before proper diagnosis, it is difficult to evaluate whether the lump is malignant or benign. In many cases, the lumps are actually devoid of any cancerous cells. However, it is important to address the situation and go in for an immediate medical check up on identifying any lumps in the breast, whether painful or not. Men could also contract breast cancer but the incidence is fairly low in comparison to women.

The technique of diagnosis of breast cancer involves procedures of ultrasound, mammogram and biopsy. On detecting malignancy, either a specific area or the entire breast is removed depending upon the extent of spread. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy may further be conducted after the surgery. Although with the advancement in medicine, the prognosis of breast cancer is quite heartening but prevention is always better than cure. Consumption of a well balanced diet comprising of good intake of fruits and vegetables and regular exercising is the best way to avoid the disease. Other recommendations that may aid in preventing the occurrence of the disease include restricting one’s intake of caffeine, chocolate, fat and alcohol.
