Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer affecting women. However, men are not completely immune to the disease. Early detection and treatment increases the survival rate tremendously.

If left for long time without proper diagnosis and treatment, breast cancer can turn out to be fatal. On the positive side, breast cancer is easily detectable even in early stages and is curable as well. It is mandatory for women of all age groups to learn the simple techniques employed for examining cancerous tumors at home. A monthly breast examination by observation is one of the most inexpensive techniques to detect any type of cancerous outgrowths.

Symptoms of breast cancer are:

• A lump like outgrowth on one or both sides of the breast
• If the lump appears to be mobile (moving around) it is a cause of concern and requires immediate treatment.
• Presence of a lump under the armpit is also a sign of tumor growth in the breast tissue.

Other symptoms are:

• Extreme itching and redness of breasts
• A sudden increase in size of one of the breasts
• Fluid/pus like discharge from the nipples
• Change in color of the areola

If you notice any of the above symptoms, it is advisable to get a mammogram or an ultra scan performed to verify the presence of cancerous cells. If the tests do not seem convincing enough, you can always go in for a biopsy. Here, a small portion of the tumor is removed and sent for analysis. This test will give you clear results regarding the presence or absence of cancerous cells, type of cancerous outgrowth and the stage of infiltration.
