HIV or Human Immunodeficiency Virus is responsible for causing AIDS. This virus specifically attacks the immune system of the body. Immune cells prevent the entry of foreign substances, microorganisms or pathogens. They help the body fight against diseases, infections and disorders. HIV attacks immune cells like the CD 4 and T cells impairing the health status of the affected individual.
When the CD4 and T cell count in the body goes below 200, the person is said to be suffering from Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome, or AIDS. When the count is above 200, the person is not diagnosed for AIDS but is treated for reducing the virulence of HIV to prevent the occurrence of AIDS.
Symptoms of HIV:
He/she may develop rashes all over the body. Fever is often accompanied with headache and loss of appetite. The person will exhibit flu like symptoms and may disregard the condition as nothing serious. Muscle weakness and aches are also observed. In some cases, enlargement and swelling of glands can be seen. However, these symptoms are not persistent and disappear in a week or two making the virus extremely lethal. HIV stays in the body, circulates and slowly destroys immune cells, taking at least five to ten years for the condition to aggravate leading to AIDS.
Symptoms of AIDS:
The person exhibits numerous degenerative changes due to decreased immunity. Even common flu can become a serious issue and lead to death because the body will not be able to fight the flu virus due to impaired immunity. Lethargy, diminished work output, inability to carry out normal activities due to tiredness, loss of appetite leading to excessive weight loss, night sweats and fever on a regular basis, diarrhea, vomiting, mental apathy and confusion, lack of thinking and reasoning ability, decreased mental functioning, seizures and genital sores are observed.
