Weight Gain During First Trimester Pregnancy

The saying, “Too much of anything can make you sick”, can never be more true, especially when you are pregnant. When it comes to diet and weight control, you need to be especially careful during this critical time. Too much weight gain can lead to diseases and conditions like gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, fatigue, backaches, and high blood pressure. Without enough weight and nourishment, your body will not be able to produce breast milk for your baby after delivery.

The nutritionists say the amount of expected weight gain during pregnancy is different for everybody. If you already have a healthy weight before pregnancy, you should gain 3-5 pounds during your first trimester. However, if you are underweight, 5 – 6 pounds should be expected gain.  Finally, if you are overweight, you only need to gain an extra 1-2 pounds in your first trimester. Your weight gain should be at a steady rate. It may fluctuate from time to time, but the gain and loss should not be too fast. Sudden weight gain and loss can be the sign of preeclampsia.

In addition, your diet should be rich in vitamins and minerals. Try to avoid junk food. Although junk foods may help you gain weight fast, it does not have essential nutrients for a developing baby. Foods like nuts, avocados, and fatty fish which are high in good fats are better choices of diet.
