When Does Ovulation Occur After Childbirth ?

Childbirth means carrying a child in the womb for nine months and then delivering the child through normal or a surgical procedure. When a woman is pregnant, she stops menstruating and there is no more monthly periods until the baby she is carrying is born.

This is a normal process because the woman is not ovulating as she is already carrying a child inside. Nature has made the woman in such a way. So, even if a woman has sex without protection when she is pregnant, there is no harm. The ovulation has stopped. Only after the baby is born that the menstruation period could restore.

It is very different in woman to woman. Some women get their periods within a month after the baby is born. This typically happens with women who do not breast feed their babies. For some women, who breast feed, the periods may not occur as long as they breast feed, or it may occur after four to five months. Basically, it is different for each woman.

There is no specific time period or time line as to when a woman should start menstruating after child birth. However, there have also been cases when a woman has not been menstruating but ovulating because there have been women who have got pregnant within a couple of months of delivering their baby. So, doctors are evaluating the reason if there is actually any relation between ovulating and menstruation. Some women do ovulate without the presence of menstruation. This trend has been noticed in both post pregnancy women and pre-menopausal women.
