For most women, the first sign of being pregnant is missing a period. However, the pregnancy can only be confirmed after a pregnancy test as missing a period does not automatically translate to being pregnant.
However, the symptoms of pregnancy in the first week can be very confusing as some women can have bleeding around the time they are expecting their period to start.However, this bleeding is known as implantation bleeding, and it is of a different color. It is usually light pink or brown in color, and takes place between 6 and 12 days after ovulation when the egg has been fertilized by the sperm. Usually implantation bleeding is considered to be normal as long as the women is does not experience cramps, excessive bleeding or back pain.
In the first week of pregnancy, the women end up feeling tired, irritated, suffer from tenderness of the breasts, sensitivity to smells, light-headedness and they can also experience craving or dislike for certain foods. However, it must be pointed out that different women react differently, and the symptoms of pregnancy in the first week vary in degree.
Most of the symptoms are due to increase in the levels progesterone, human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and estrogen. These hormones are important pregnancy hormones as they ensure proper growth and development of the fetus, making the uterus strong and also prevent contraction of the uterus.
Besides these symptoms, women will also feel the urge for frequent urination, especially at night. This is usually due to increased blood flow. The area around the nipples will become broader as well as darker in color.
