Chances Of Pregnancy After Period

Medically, there are certain days of the month when a woman is suppose to be the most fertile and there are days when the level of fertility is almost nil.

For those couples, who do not desire conception, the infertile time period is known as the 'safe period'; whereas the most fertile days signify the 'unsafe period'.In general, the menstrual cycle in women is taken to be of 28 days. The first day of the menstruation is denoted as 'Day 1' of the cycle. During the process of menstruation, the unfertilized egg released in the previous cycle is eliminated by the body along with the lining of the uterus. Therefore, during these days the chances of pregnancy are almost zero as there is no egg in the reproductive system and the uterine lining has been shed so there is no place for implantation of the embryo as well. Once the process of menstruation is over, which could be day 5 to day 7 in women, the ovaries start preparing for the next cycle of egg production. Logically, from day 5 to 10, the new egg is being prepared and the uterine lining is being renewed. Thus, probability of conception immediately after the periods is remote.

Normally, ovulation occurs on day 14 of the cycle. The chances of pregnancy start rising from day 10 or 11. The body of a woman is extremely receptive to sperms just before ovulation. The life span of a sperm is about 2 to 3 days within a woman’s body. The probability of a pregnancy is the highest on day 13 or 14. That is the time when the egg is either about to be released or ovulation has already occurred. Days 12 to 16 are designated as most fertile days of the cycle. After this the rate of fertility starts decreases and is the least towards day 23. Now, the unfertilized egg starts withering and so do the chances of pregnancy.

However, there are stray cases of women conceiving during times of the cycle which are otherwise known to be low in fertility such as during menstruation, immediately after menstruation or even after day 20. The reason behind such variations include shift in dates of menstruation thereby altering the cycle, a different day of ovulation other than day 14 and longer viability of the sperm.

Some women ovulate as early as day 6 or as late as day 21. Also, the life span of the sperm can at times extend to a week. Such statistics indicate that although a general line can be followed but there are no confirmed pointers for conceiving or not conceiving at a particular time of the month. Each woman’s cycle is different and therefore, the chances of pregnancy are individualized.
