Depression is a medical condition which gradually influences our ability to think, perform, react and feel. It is essentially a mind related ailment, which if left untreated can have drastic negative implications in the individual’s life. Patients of depression often think very negatively and feel emotionally stressed.
This disease leads to sharp mood swings. Slowly the person may see only despair around him or her and could under extreme circumstances even resort to ending of life. Depression not only poses problems for the patient but can be very taxing for those associated to the person concerned as well.
Treatment for this problem is available in the form of psychotherapy and medication but the primary initiative towards the cure has to come from the patient itself. The depressed individual needs to gather the courage to fight the engulfing emotions of negativity and desolation and have the will to move towards better prospects in life.
Some of the ways to deal with depression include positive thinking, setting realistic goals, keeping oneself busy, involvement in hobbies or any sport and refraining from any form of abuse. If the individual and near ones are unable to cope with the signs of depression, medical aid must be taken. Since antidepressants lead to many side effects such as headache, insomnia and sexual problems; psychotherapy may be a better alternative of treatment. Being close to nature can also work wonders on the mind of a person. Fresh air, greenery, birds and animals can create a very soothing effect and assist in combating emotional turmoil. Above all, the most common reason for depression in today’s world is shortage of money to fulfill one’s high expectations. The only way to survive this depression is to restrict one’s desires and lead a happy and content life. Remember to always keep your desires within your means.
