The most wonderful and cherished phase of life is often pinpointed as childhood. The word ‘childhood’ is mostly considered synonymous with ‘blithe enjoyment’. However, this may not be completely true. You may think that the condition of depression is alien to childhood but you would be surprised to know that many children undergo depression in the so called ‘best years’ of their life.
Unlike cases of depression in adults that require medical intervention in the form of psychotherapy and medication, depression in children can be tackled extremely well by parents themselves. However, in order to do so, the parents must be well informed and well equipped to deal with the situation judiciously.
Firstly, it is essential to make your child comfortable with the feeling of sadness so that he or she does not feel the need to camouflage the sentiments. They need to be told that it is absolutely human and normal to feel depressed at certain times in one’s life. We often manipulate the truth to protect our children from any form of sorrow prevailing around them. This may not be such a good idea as children can gauge the surrounding emotions. Therefore, it is best to be honest even if it means death of a dear one or a pet. Allow the child time and space to lament and vent out the grief. Assure them that you are there for them whenever they need a listening ear or a comforting hug. Never belittle their emotions as your reactions may have a major influence on them. At the same time, one must remember than parents are role models for their children. Therefore, they will imbibe their life skills from you. So, be very careful about the messages that your actions are communicating especially in terms of how you cope with stress in your own life. Lastly, if despite your best attempts the symptoms of depression do not seem to subside then it may be wise to take professional advice.
