What Can Cause Dementia ?

Dementia is an age related mental illness that is unfortunately cannot be reversed in most of the cases. However, if detected early, it might be reversed with proper medication and treatment. The words like degeneration and progression are most commonly used with dementia.
The most uncommon causes of dementia are addiction to alcohol, side effects of some medicines, deficiency of Vitamin B1, endocrine or metabolic disorders, infections which damage neurons of brain such as syphilis, AIDS, and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD).
The other causes of dementia are illustrated as under:
Alzheimer's disease - This is one of the major causes of dementia for people who are older. All most two-thirds cases of Dementia cases also have Alzheimer's. The risk of having this dementia progresses with age.
Dementia with Lewy Bodies - This is the next common cause for getting dementia. Once person is diagnosed with this type of dementia, the condition worsens rapidly.
Vascular Dementia - Dementia may also result due to strokes in the brain. These strokes destroy the blood vessels. Hence, sufficient blood cannot be supplied to the brain causing dementia.
Pick’s disease - It is generally attained at the age of 40 to 65. The actual cause of this disease is a genetic mutation in the seventeenth chromosome. It can also be termed as echolalia a condition where the words and sentences are repeated time and again.
Degenerative Diseases - Also few degenerative diseases may cause dementia. These diseases actually degenerates the basic cognitive skills of person resulting into dementia type symptoms. These diseases are namely Parkinson's disease, Lou Gehrig's disease and Huntington's disease.
