If the causes of dementia are predicted correctly the symptoms of dementia can be reduced and sometimes, the disease could be reversed. For this, the following treatment is suggested.
Treatment for Dementia:
People who are diagnosed with vascular dementia the condition cannot be reversed but doctor may advise and prescribe medicines to prevent high blood pressure, high cholesterol and heart diseases which may lead to damage the brain cells.
Medicines cannot completely cure dementia but they have the ability to reduce the symptoms and improve the mental state of the affected person. Few of these medicines which can help are Donepezil(Aricept), Galantamine (Reminyl), and rivastigmine (Exelon), to progress or retain good mental state. Donepezil and galantamine improves cognitive abilities with few side effects. Rivastigmine is effective in helping patients suffering from dementia due to Lewy body and Parkinson's. However, it has some side effects like nausea, vomiting, and loss of weight. Memantine (Namenda) can slow the advanced stages of Alzheimer's disease. It may also help those suffering from moderate vascular dementia. Antidepressants can be given to treat depression. The antidepressants that have the least side effects are SSRIs, like fluoxetine (Prozac) and citalopram (Celexa).
