Medicines For Dementia
Medicines are used by physicians to treat the underlying condition that results in dementia. Medicines are given to prolong a sound mental health for as long as possible when it is accepted that the condition cannot be reversed. For people with vascular dementia, appropriate medicines are given to prevent from future strokes especially in people who are already suffering from elevated blood pressure and high cholesterol.
Medications are also given to reduce and manage the symptoms related to dementia such as depression, insomnia, hallucinations, anger and anxiety.
The choices of medicines are accordingly done by the doctors to maintain sound mental health of the patient for as long as he survives. The choices are enumerated as follows:
- In order to Alzheimer's, cholinesterase inhibitors like donepezil (Aricept), galantamine (Reminyl), and rivastigmine (Exelon) are given. Investigations show that this category of drugs can be used to treat patients with vascular dementia also. Donepezil and galantamine have been proved to advance mental function with little side effects. Rivastigmine is also helpful for patients suffering from Lewy bodies or Parkinson's disease related dementia. However, certain side effects such as nausea, vomiting, and weight loss are frequent. In the present scenario, all the medicines mentioned above have the capability to slow down the Dementia process but cannot reverse it.
- Memantine (Namenda) is a specific variety of drug that can slow down the progress of late stages of Alzheimer's disease. It can also help those with light to fair vascular dementia.
- Antidepressants are also used to treat depression, in dementia. They must be used with warning, since they may result into delirium. Antidepressants like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), like fluoxetine(Prozac) and citalopram (Celexa) can be used.
