Elderly Dementia Symptoms

The symptoms of dementia include loss of memory, unable to learn new things or recalling them. Communicating with people becomes a problem. Person suffering from dementia tends to lose control over coordination and motor functions. There are unusual changes in the behavior and personality. Suspicion, immobility, depression, agitation, delusions could also be part of the symptoms along with the symptoms mentioned earlier.

The initial phases of dementia in the elderly show symptoms which are very difficult to analyze because these are common to many other diseases, and may be a result of other conditions. Therefore, as the symptoms advance, it can be understood that the situation is worsening and the phases have progressed more. For example, when the person affected displays an absolute loss of identification of friends and family members, it would mean the final stage of the disease has arrived. Incapacity to move unaided, and lack of desire for food are the signs that denote that the person no longer has the ability to fight dementia and is nearing his or her end.

Various reasons are attributed to be the causes of dementia. Few can be reversed and others are irreversible. The reversible dementia encompasses disorders associated with the immune system, infections, nutritional deficiencies, poisoning, brain tumors, and heart and lung problems. Few other causes that can also be reversed are subdural hematomas, abnormalities of the endocrine system, medicinal side effects, and situation like anoxia. Many a times, depression in elderly may result into dementia-like symptoms like depressed mood, weight gain or loss, feelings of worthlessness, unable to concentrate and think clearly and withdrawal from others.
