Bulimia Nervosa is often assumed to be more common in women, but studies say that men are equally a part of this eating disorder. However, most men do not want to accept it, as they consider it as a shame to be labeled as suffering from a women’s disease.

Bulimia is basically regarded as a state where the person stops eating food and starves. Even the food that is taken inside is thrown out by vomit. It is not gender specific to stop eating though it is more common in women. Women in order to maintain a perfect shape often fall prey to it and start starving themselves. Starvation leads to weak body and a continuous habit like these results in malnutrition and extreme underweight. Well, few men also try out such practices to remain fit and look in shape. As compared to women, who generally get this type of eating disorders at young age, men are most likely to get it at a later stage of their life. Eating disorders like stopping to eat for days and months, undergoing extra strenuous and vigorous exercises to attain perfect shape, and sometimes alcoholism and excessive smoking all are the reasons for Bulimia Nervosa in men.

It is difficult to obtain a correct image of how many men are influenced by bulimia. As per a study done on 9,000 adults by Harvard University Medical School, about twenty-five percent of the adults who were victims of eating disorder turned out to be men. So, it is not uncommon that men can also be a sufferer of Bulimia Nervosa.
