You need to have lot of patience in order to teach an autistic child to read. You would have tried hard, but the success percent would be minimal. In such a circumstance, it is easy to get disheartened and discouraged. However, do not give up it is difficult though not impossible.
The first step to teach him reading would be to understand and observe him carefully for few days as to what gives him joy. What are the senses which overpower him? Does a bright color, strong odor or even auditory noise excite him? You have to know the child’s favorite things. Knowing his likings and disliking would be a key factor in teaching him to read. For example, you may initiate your first step towards learning by introducing him to a thing that he likes the most. If he finds the learning interesting only then he would tend to pay attention or else he would lose interest soon.
Do not try to jump into words straight. Flashcards showing pictures of his interest would be a great help. Remember there should not be too many intricacies in the picture it should be simple with bright colors. You may download pictures from the web pages and insert text box for the related words. The words should be small and such which he can easily relate to. For an instance a picture showing train can have words like tracks, car or whistle.
Once you are done with flash cards and you know the child is comfortable and familiar with few simple words you may move to books and readers. These books should have pictures which he is familiar with. Too much of texts or pictures of animals depicted as human and their related activities would confuse and puzzle him. Introduction of music along with all these would be also of immense help.
