The symptoms of attention deficit disorder are mostly blurred and it has been found that no two individuals necessarily possess the same symptoms. Broadly psychologists have given three basic behavioral disorders like inattentiveness, hyper-activeness and impulsiveness as major symptoms of attention deficit disorder. However, practically these disorders are found in many children in varying degrees at various point of time. Therefore, it is often difficult to analyze whether a child is actually suffering from such a disorder or not.
The American Psychiatric Association has evolved a checklist to ascertain whether a child is a victim of attention deficit disorder. This checklist comprises of 14 behavioral characteristics out of which if eight symptoms matches, then the child is considered to be having attention deficit disorder:
All the above quoted behavioral disorders are further divided into mainly three basic forms which have a particular clinical observation that can nicely demonstrate a child’s behavior. These are Inattentive type which is a classic form of attention deficit disorder; Hyperactive or impulsive type which is a typical form of Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, and a Collective type which possess both the forms.
