The role of diet on mental health is not completely understood, but scientists and doctors increasingly believe that there is some kind of relationship between diet and mental health.

It is even possible that how a person thinks, talks or behaves may be largely because of the diet. For example, some food items can stimulate some senses in the brain. Like smell stimulates hunger, for example. So, there is a relationship between food and mental health on the whole.

A well balanced diet plays a role in keeping the brain development healthy. Brain is a complex organ and it needs amino acids, carbohydrates and fatty acids to function properly. It also needs vitamins, mineral and water to function normally. In addition, the brain needs proteins to work normally. Many of the compounds required for normal functioning of the brain cannot be produced by the body. So they must be introduced into the body through the food we consume.

Having a balanced diet will supply the brain with all the right food sources it needs for its development. One research showed that an unequal consumption of Omega 3 and Omega 6 essential fatty acids can interfere with the mental health. These fatty acids are crucial for the brain because they required by the neurotransmitters and help them to pass messages to and fro. The conclusion is that an imbalanced diet can lead to memory loss.

A healthy diet means eating vegetables, fruits and nuts in the right proportions. Different types of fish like salmon have plenty of Omega 3 fatty acid, and are good for the brain. However, the same cannot be said about steak or even chicken.
