Healthy Digestive System And Diet

Many diseases pertaining to the digestive system, such as gastro-esophageal reflux, celiac disease, irritable bowel syndrome and Crohn’s disease, can be prevented by having a healthy digestive system. And, the only way to do that is to consume a diet that has nutrient content and low fat content.

The body requires nutrients for optimal health. A person should avoid consuming sugar and processed food. Instead the person should be looking to eat lots of vegetables and fruits. Drinks like alcohol and caffeine are not good for the system and should be limited. To ensure that your digestive system’s health is maintained, it is important to chew food well. Many people gulp down their food and then suffer from all kinds of digestive problems.

A healthy digestive system diet should contain beet greens and red beet. These foods are sources of potassium, magnesium, calcium, beta carotene and iron. To get fiber, you can eat avocados, which will also supply the body with monounsaturated fats, sweet potatoes and gold potatoes. Many people avoid oats, but they do not realize that oats are nutrient-rich. They supply the body with much needed fiber, Vitamin E, phosphorus, zinc, folate and selenium. You should also consume cod liver oil supplements, as they provide vitamins A and D which helps to maintain the lining of the digestive system.

It is recommended that a person consumes 25 to 35 gm of fiber every day. Fiber remains undigested and its main purpose is to prevent constipation and provide food for the beneficial bacteria that inhabit the colon. Foods that are fiber-rich are fruits, beans, raw veggies, oatmeal, whole grains, legumes, and avocados. By eating a fiber-rich diet, people can avoid digestive system ailments like hemorrhoids, IBS and diverticulosis.

Probiotics is also important for maintaining the health of the digestive system. This refers to beneficial bacteria that are present in the digestive tract. These bacteria ensure that pathogens do not proliferate in the system and also help in the absorption of nutrients. In addition, they build up the immune system and aid in the metabolization of lactose. Some research suggests that probiotics can also ease symptoms related to IBS and Crohn’s disease. You can probiotics from kefir and low fat yogurt.

Furthermore, the fat intake should be limited. Food rich in fat slows down the digestive process and results in flatulence and constipation. If you want to consume food rich in fats, make sure that you combine it with food that is high in fiber.

Proteins are important for health, but eating meats that are full of fat can again lead to flatulence and constipation. Hence, make sure that you consume lean meat, like skinless chicken and turkey, and pork loin.

Water aids the digestive process and allows nutrients to be absorbed. Hence, water consumption is a must for a healthy digestive system. As mentioned previously, a person should be looking to drink around 8 glasses of water every day. Caffeine and carbonated drinks should not be substituted for water. However, fresh fruit juices can be. Also, reduce intake of alcohol and coffee. Over consumption of alcohol and caffeine can result in heartburn and ulcers.

Along with a healthy digestive system diet, it is a must to do regular exercise. Exercise ensures that the food moves from one part of the digestive system to the other, and reduces the possibility of constipation. Furthermore, doing regular exercise ensure that optimal weight is maintained. This, in turn, is beneficial for the overall health of the digestive system.
