When Is A Root Canal Necessary ?

When there is a problem with the pulp of the tooth, often root canal is advocated. This is really good for people, as before the advent of root canal, the only way to treat injured or damaged pulp was extraction. Root canal allows the dentist to save the tooth.

The pulp found inside the tooth is soft. It is this part of the tooth that has the blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue. It runs all the way from the top of the tooth until the very tip of the tooth’s root. The pulp can get damaged or diseased due to deep decay or a crack. This leads to bacteria proliferating in the pulp, leading to an infection or pus formation. Since the pulp cannot heal itself, the only solution is a root canal. If the infection is allowed to remain, it could result in an abscess forming in the jaw bone at the tip of the root. This can cause serious damage to the bone. It can also result in the removal of the tooth.

Some of the signs when root canal is necessary are as follows:

Excruciating pain is one of the main symptoms that root canal is necessary. This pain will be present especially when you chew or apply pressure on the affected tooth. The pain is so severe that it can pose a problem in day to day life.

As the pulp contains the nerves, when it is affected, the tooth will become sensitive to cold and heat. This sensitivity can be quite painful and can last for a prolonged period of time. Often people become sensitive to cold and heat after a regular filling. This is not a sign that root canal is required because this sensitivity is usually for a short while. If you stop consuming the hot or cold beverage or food, the sensitivity will disappear.

Often when the decay is happening within the tooth and is not visible from the outside, it can result in the tooth getting discolored. This discoloration will not disappear even if you use a tooth-whitening product. This is another sign that root canal for the tooth is a necessity.

When there is an infection in the pulp, it can cause inflammation of the gum. Usually, the inflammation is localized, but it can affect the entire gum. If the entire gum is affected, you will notice an abscess in the gum of the affected tooth. In addition, you will also experience pain due to pus formation.
