What Happens When A Root Canal Molar Splits ?

In a root canal, the pulp is removed. It is the pulp that keeps a tooth alive and so when it is removed, teeth tend to become weak and brittle. Such a tooth is prone to splitting and fracturing. This is more common in molars than any other tooth that has had a root canal.

Usually, when a root canal molar splits, it is because the roots have fractured quite badly. In most cases, the split will not be apparent while the root canal is being done and will result in pain after the procedure is completed. In such a case, it can be said that the root canal has failed and the person would have to go back to the dentist for further treatment. If the root canal molar has split, the dentist may not be able to save the tooth and the only option may be an extraction.

Usually, in a root canal molar split, the tooth can divide vertically. As molars have two roots, the dentist will see whether one of the roots can be saved. If that is the case, then he will try to cap the tooth containing a single root. However, if all the roots need removal, then the tooth would have to be extracted.

Usually root canal molar split when the tooth is not crowned. After a root canal procedure, the tooth tends to get weak and brittle. So, when a person chews something hard, it can cause the tooth to split. That is why it is advisable that people put a crown on the molar after a root canal treatment. Usually, people wait to put a crown, as the root canal treatment itself is quite an expensive procedure and then there is the added cost of putting a crown.

If your molar splits after a root canal procedure, it is best to visit a dentist as soon as possible. Usually, you will not be able to do any treatment at home for it. However, make sure that you rinse your mouth thoroughly using some warm water and salt. This will help to remove any remnants of the tooth that are still present in your mouth. Do not chew food from that side of the mouth, as there is a risk of food particles getting stuck and leading to an infection. So, rinse your mouth out thoroughly after having anything to eat. If you are experiencing pain, take an over-the-counter painkiller before rushing to the dentist. If you are unable to visit a dentist soon, get dental cement from a drugstore and apply it on the split. It will cover it until such time you can visit a dentist.
