Alcholism Heart Attack

While scientifically it has been proven that drinking alcohol in moderation can help protect people from getting heart-related ailments, there is also scientific evidence to show that overindulging in alcohol can result in heart-related ailments, especially heart attack. Most people are unable to limit their intake of alcohol and this is what turns into a major problem. Alcoholism heart attack is a reality that many people have to face.

A scientific study done by researchers in Boston found that people who were admitted into hospitals with heart attacks had a tendency to drink heavily for at least a year before they got the attack. Also, binge drinkers are also at a risk of suffering from alcoholic heart attacks. This risk is higher compared to those who do not binge drink. Researchers say that the type of alcohol does not make a difference when it comes to alcoholic heart attack. Any type of alcohol, be it beer, wine or whisky, can lead to heart attack when it is consumed in excess.

People who are heavy drinkers suffer from high triglyceride levels, as per the American Heart Association. Triglycerides are a kind of cholesterol that can result in blocked arteries and also diabetes. When the arteries supplying blood to the heart are blocked due to fats and cholesterol, blood does not reach the heart. This can result in a heart attack, stroke or any other type of heart disease. If a person is a habitual drinker, their triglyceride levels will be high and this makes the person prone to alcoholic heart attack.

Furthermore, alcohol has been directly linked to heart failure, as it tends to weaken the muscle of the heart. Prolonged consumption of alcohol can result in an enlarged heart. When the heart gets enlarged, it cannot pump blood properly and hence the body does not get sufficient amounts of oxygen and nutrients. Also, alcohol results in irregular heart beats, sudden cardiac death and also stroke.

Two of the leading causes of heart attacks are high cholesterol levels and elevated blood pressure. These two problems can occur due to alcoholism. Hence, alcohol though can have beneficial effects on the heart when consumed in moderation, it has the potential of causing several heart ailments. Hence, the damage done by alcohol to the heart outweighs the benefits.

Those who want to protect the health of their heart and also not end up getting alcohol heart attack should try to stop consumption of alcohol. Regular consumption is not good for the heart and overall health in general.
