Concussion is a brain injury which usually occurs after a blow to the head. Sometimes it results in only a brief memory lapse or dizziness. Losing consciousness does not always happen. In most people symptoms of concussion occur within the first seven to 10 days and disappear within three months.
Post-concussion syndrome is a disorder in which concussion symptoms like headaches and dizziness last for weeks or even months after the impact. Post-concussion symptoms include:
Headaches feel like tension and migraine headaches, and may have qualities of both. There can also be changes in behavior like irritability, stubbornness, suspicious and argumentative behavior which is apparent to family members.
What are the causes of post-concussion syndrome? It is thought as being caused by structural damage to the brain resulting from the impact that caused the concussion. Some believe that it is related to psychological factors. In other cases, both physiological effects of brain trauma and emotional reactions to these effects may play a role in the development of symptoms.
It is still unclear as to why some people with concussion develop post-concussion syndrome while others do not. There has been no proven relationship between the severity of injury and the chances of developing post-concussion syndrome.
The risk of developing post-concussion syndrome increases with age. It is more prevalent in women. Some studies indicate that the disorder is associated with car accidents, falls or may be sports-related.
