Dangers Of Concussions In Football

Football is an active and violent game, and the players are often prone to severe injuries. In this injury prone game one of the most common kinds of injury is head injury. Many times the players hurt their head because of the ball or banging with each other or even falling down. When there is a severe impact on the head, it ends in a concussion.

Some types of concussion may be harmless, but there are some concussions that can prove to be very harmful. If there is a swelling after an injury, one should get it checked. Concussions can actually cause a long lasting brain damage. However, the more important thing to understand here is that football is not the reason for a concussion. Rather it is the head injury that causes the concussion. A concussion can occur as a result of a car accident or workplace hazards or even a fall. (See Reference 1)

One of the researches studied the brain tissue of football players and it revealed that concussions had caused a lot of brain damage. When there is brain damage, the cells and tissues in the localized part of the brain die. Football players also complain of dizziness and headaches frequently, and these are actually caused by the underlying concussions. (See Reference 1)

However, now researches indicate that damaged brain tissue can lead to Alzheimer’s as a long term effect. Usually, a normal concussion will show symptoms like pain in the area of injury and also some degree of headache; and when the symptoms subside, people tend to forget about the injury. However, most doctors recommend that a person should get a scan done when they have had a concussion. It is always better to rule out severe injuries rather than allowing the injuries to result in brain damage. In addition, football players should not resume playing until they are given go ahead by the neurologist and all the associated symptoms of the concussion have disappeared completely.
