How To Give First Aid For Burns ?
Burns can occur at any time. And, anyone can get burned. Sometimes, giving first aid for burns could make all the difference to the victim.
So, here are a few tips and guidelines that must be followed to give first aid in case of burns.
- Take the person away from the source of burning and let the airway of the victim be open.
- You can remove the parts of the clothing stuck to the body after burning, but not the ones that are difficult removing off.
- Cover the body with a clean cloth loosely around the body.
- Control the bleeding by applying light pressure taking care not to scratch or rub the burnt parts
- Attend to the victim till any medical help arrives.
- In the case of a chemical burn, brush off any dry chemical powder on the body. Then wash the body with clean water for 20 minutes at least or until the medical help arrives.
In cases of first degree and second degree burns, the following procedure needs to be followed:
- Apply cold water or a clean cloth dipped in cold water on the burnt parts for about fifteen minutes or till the time the pain soothes down. Be careful not to use ice lest it results in frostbite.
- Cover up the burnt part with a clean, dry cloth like sterile gauze. Placing it firmly, tape it at the edges of the gauze. After changing this dressing the following day, keep changing it every 2nd day.
- It is highly advisable not to use ointments. You can apply Aloe Vera after the skin on the closed skin daily for 3 or 4 times. For a more serious burn, which is less than 3” x 2”, the use of second moisture pads is advisable.
- Do not break the blisters formed on the skin. If they do break themselves, you can spray an anti-bacterial solution or an ointment, as prescribed by the doctor.
- Cover the burn injuries by a sterile dressing.
