Old age brings along with it many disorders and discomforts. Bruising is one such problem that becomes more common with old age. Bruises are formed on the skin surface when the small blood vessels are damaged due to any injury affecting the skin. The blood from the supplying blood vessels flow into the tissues giving the skin a bluish or black color on the affected area and can be quite painful.
Most commonly happening with kids while playing or being a bit careless as their nature goes, it also affects the older people largely due to their ageing skin. The epidermis, the outermost layer of the skin and the layer of subcutaneous fats surrounding the blood vessels get thinner as the person grows old. This weak condition of the skin makes their blood vessels quite close to injuries. Add to this the weakening of the walls of the blood vessels and the capillaries that turns them fragile. Thus, sometimes, even a small trauma can cause serious bruising in older people.
Though common with old age, getting bruised easily should be a cause of concern as it is also a warning bell for some serious health risks. Getting bruised easily can be attributed to the alteration of the platelet levels or the blood cells that help in blood clotting or in the reduction of the blood clotting factors. A person, who gets bruises easily and has problems of fatigue, night sweats or has some other signs of illnesses, should be examined thoroughly by a doctor. It is advisable to have a blood test done to detect the presence of any serious platelet related disorders like leukemia or any health risk causing the reduction in platelet levels.
