Types Of Foot Amputations

Amputation is the process of removal of a body extreme, mostly to save a life. Amputation, in some countries and culture is used as a punishment for crimes. Although in surgery, it becomes a necessity to amputate a particular part to stop a fatal infection like gangrene or other harmful tumors from killing a person.

In a surgical amputation, the degree of amputation is considered by the intensity and the body part affected by the injury. There are different kinds of foot amputation.

Amputation of the foot – It includes all the foot parts. Examples include the mid-tarsal and toe amputations. The commonly affected part is the great toe leading to improper balance and problems in walking.

Ankle Disarticulation – It calls for the amputation of whole ankle. The amputee can muster up to move without the help of a prosthetic.

Below-knee amputation (Transtibial) – In this type, the amputation is done below knee but above ankle. The amputee will have difficulty resting on stump.

Above-knee amputation (Transfemoral) – The amputation is done at the thigh level. It enables the amputee to sit.

Knee-bearing amputation – In this case, lower leg is completely amputated and it is difficult to make prosthesis in such an injury.

Hip disarticulation – The complete leg bone is removed in hip disarticulation. The surgeons try to retain some length of femur to enable use of prosthetic.

The operating surgeons try to retain the bone and joint as much as possible so as to enable the amputee use a prosthetic. Moreover, the shorter a limb becomes, the more energy is needed to use it.
