There are several kinds of sports injuries, and one of the most common kinds of sports injury is caused due to overwork and overuse of muscles and joints. An athlete not only has to participate in the sports, but he or she also has to train throughout the year. Hence, the muscles and joints of the body are always experiencing strain and wear and tear. This often causes repetitive injuries among sportspeople.
Here is a list of top ten injuries in sports:
1. Muscle pull is perhaps the most common type of injury seen among sportspeople. A person can pull just about any muscle even if he or she does proper warm up and cooling down exercises. The muscle pull can occur due to fatigue, overuse of a muscle or even due to a fall. (See Reference 1)
2. Neck pain occurs due to spasm in the neck muscle or pulling a muscle. Generally, tennis players are susceptible to this injury when they attempt to serve or when they attempt an overhead smash. However, even other sportspeople can sustain this injury, like cyclists. When this injury occurs, the person can turn his or her head just in the direction of the pain. (See Reference 1)
3. Shoulder impingement is a condition that occurs due to weakness in the shoulder ligament and small rotator cuff muscles. Due to this weakness, ball of the shoulder tends to slide and move in the joint. This injury is common among ballplayers, like those who play softball, golf, baseball, tennis and volleyball. In addition, the injury can also occur among swimmers and weightlifters. (See Reference 1)
4. Lower back strains can occur in anyone who is involved in playing some sports. This strain occurs due to twisting the back awkwardly, lifting an unusually heavy weight or doing some kind of activity that the person has not done before. This injury occurs mostly because of weak muscles or tearing of the muscle. Generally, those who are into golf, weightlifting, tennis or martial arts are more prone to lower back strains. 5. Tennis elbow is the name given to swelling of the muscles in the forearm and the tendon that joins the muscles to the elbow. This usually occurs in tennis players when they delay the backhand hitting of the ball. It can also occur when the tennis player uses his or her wrist to add more spin to the ball while serving. Tennis elbow is also prevalent among golf players. (See Reference 1)
6. Runner's knee occurs due to a misalignment of the patella, or the kneecap. The kneecap generally moves in an upward and downward direction in its groove, but when the kneecap moves to one side, it results in runner's knee. This condition can wear out the cartilage of affected knee. While it is most common among runners, any sportsperson involved in running can develop this injury. (See Reference 1)
7. Shin splint refers to pain experienced in the muscles close to the bone of the shin. This sports injury result from running or jumping on a hard surface or by overusing the muscle. Generally, this injury occurs in people who are not used to training, but it can also be seen among experienced sportspeople who turn to wearing lighter shoes or work harder on their speed. 8. Ankle sprain occurs when the ankle twists causing swelling and throbbing at the ankle. It can occur when the foot does not land normally while jumping, running or jogging. Even volleyball players and tennis players are prone to it. At times, a hairline fracture of the ankle is often mistaken for ankle sprain and hence, it is always advisable to get an X-ray done. 9, Achilles tendonitis occurs because of overuse of the tendon, like jumping too often and landing on the heel. Usually, basketball and volleyball players are susceptible to this kind of injury. This injury can take long to heal and if the pain is too much bear, then the person may require a surgery. (See Reference 1)
10. Arch pain or plantar fasciitis is common injury amongst middle aged people who lead a sedentary life and then suddenly take up a physical activity. Generally, those who start running are more prone to this injury. The injury occurs due to over stretching of the arch of the foot. It can also occur due to gain of ten to twenty pounds of weight or wearing shoes that do not fit properly. (See Reference 1)More Articles :
