Sport Injury Statistics

Injury is an integral part of sports. All sports are susceptible to injuries, not merely because of trauma of body contact with another player but also because of misuse or overuse of some body parts.

As is to be expected, contact sports like football, hockey, American football, rugby and Australian football record the highest number of traumatic injuries. These can range from relatively minor injuries like sprains and strains, to more serious fractures and head injuries.

Boxing of course carries additional risks of its own and can sometimes result in concussion, broken ribs and other bones, damaged organs and on rare occasions, brain injury.

The following table of injuries is a 2006 compilation by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS).
