Tanning beds become extremely popular in every summer season. Most people are wary of the sun due to higher risk of skin cancer and they look towards tanning beds as a feasible and viable alternative. However, everything has its pros and cons. Many people think tanning beds are completely safe. On the contrary, these devices can prove to be quite a disaster and can result in eye injuries and skin damage.
There are 2 main issues when it comes to tanning beds. One is that it can also lead to skin cancer just like direct sun tanning, and second is that your eyes can get damaged while tanning. People, who want to have deep tans, have more to worry about. (See Reference 1)
A research shows that nearly 2 billion dollars are spent by various people for tanning every year. Many people crave for tanned skin. However, the darker and richer the tan, the more time a person needs to spend in a tanning bed. Every tanning session can last 3 to 4 hours depending on the kind of tan a person wants. In addition, a person will need to keep tanning his or her skin every 5 to 6 days in order to maintain the tan. However, this can pose a risk to the eyes. (See Reference 1)
The eyes are prone to damage when they are directly exposed to the ultraviolet rays of the sun. In a tanning bed rays equivalent to the UV rays are used for getting the color of the skin. Also, there are lights installed inside the tanning bed. The increased exposure to bright lights and UV rays can cause certain kinds of cataracts in the eyes. Eventually it can develop into serious problems like pterygium, which is a kind of tissue growth on the white part of the eye. The retina also becomes prone to damage when a person uses tanning bed continually.
