Yaz is a birth control pill that is a combination of drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol. Besides preventing unwanted pregnancy, Yaz is also used to treat symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD is a severe form of PMS) and to treat acne in women who are also looking for some method of birth control.
In clinical trials that were conducted, Yaz was found to be highly effective method of birth control. It was found that out of 100 women who used Yaz for a year, just one or two women became pregnant. This clearly proves that Yaz is a highly effective contraceptive compared to other methods of birth control. For example, out of all the women who use condoms for a year as a method of birth control, 14 percent will end up becoming pregnant.
In addition, as mentioned earlier, Yaz is also considered to be an effective treatment for PMDD and acne.
The medication is manufactured by Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals, and it is a combination of estrogen and progestin. The medication works by stopping the maturation and subsequent release of eggs from the ovaries. In addition, it also changes the mucus in the cervix and thereby, making it difficult for the sperm to gain entrance into the uterus. Yaz also changes the lining of the uterus and this makes the uterus less fit for a fertilized egg to latch on.
However, like any other method of birth control, Yaz should also be considered as 99 percent effective in preventing pregnancies. From clinical trials, Yaz has not been proven to be effective in dealing with PMS, and therefore, should not be used to treat it.
