Yaz is a birth control pill that is a combination of drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol. In addition to prevent unwanted pregnancy, Yaz is also used to treat premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) and acne. PMDD is a very severe form of pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS).
Many clinical trials have to been conducted to figure out whether Yaz makes you gain weight. Some studies showed that it was common for women to gain weight when they are on Yaz. However, these studies do not show any data whether the weight gain in women using this birth control pill was more common compared to women who were not using it.
Nonetheless, it has long been believed that most birth control pills contribute to weight gain, and that is why many women refrain from taking them. However, recent scientific studies are revealing that birth control pills may not be the culprit when it comes to weight gain, and there has to be some other reason why women on these pills gain additional kilos.
However, if you are on Yaz and you begin to notice weight gain, then there are few steps you can take to combat this. You should first endeavor to have a healthy diet consisting of lean meat, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, nuts, fresh fruits, vegetables, and fat-free milk and milk products. You should also reduce your intake of saturated fats, cholesterol, sodium, sugar and trans fats. And, you should reduce your alcohol consumption.
Besides diet, you should concentrate on being physically active for a minimum of 30 minutes a day.
In case after all these steps, you still notice a weight gain with Yaz, you should speak to your doctor on different ways to manage your weight, or for an alternative birth control pill or method.
