The pain medication Ultracet is a combination of Tramadol (Ultram) with Acetaminophen (Tylenol). Tramadol is a pain medication which is like a narcotic in nature. Actually, it belongs to the same family of narcotics. So, the dosage of Ultracet has to be carefully monitored. Otherwise the patient might get addicted to it if he takes it for a long period of time.
This medication has to be taken only with doctor’s recommendation. Take only the prescribed amount as an overdose might end up being lethal. Ultracet should be used only for five or less days. In addition, it should not be taken by people who have liver problems, addiction to alcohol, pregnant women and nursing mothers.
Tramadol reduces the transmission of pain signals to the brain by binding itself to the opioid nerves. This action is similar to what narcotics do to a person.
Acetaminophen is a milder pain reliever, and it also increases the effects of Tramadol. Acetaminophen works by increasing the body’s threshold of pain. It will make the spinal cord and brain less susceptible to pain by inhibiting the enzyme that produces prostaglandins. It also helps to decrease fever. Also, do not take Ultracet along with any sleep medication. It does not mix well.
Ultracet is used to relieve rheumatoid arthritis pain. However, it is not meant to relieve inflammation and swelling of the cartilage and lining of the joints which are caused by arthritis. However, the Ultracet 325 mg, on the other hand, does work as an anti-inflammatory drug, and helps to reduce both pain and inflammation in the patient.
