Seroquel is a common form of treatment used to treat conditions like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder etc. Whether it should be prescribed for ADHD may actually be debatable. ADHD is a disorder where the patient has a lot of hyperactivity, poor impulse control, forgetfulness, mood swings and is very much distracted.
Seroquel is said to be a very powerful antipsychotic drug and it is known to have some major side effects. It is as equally sedative as the other drugs of ADHD namely Ritalin or Prozac. The people, or rather children, suffering from ADHD have major aggressive behavior and some may also have problem in sleeping. Seroquel is used to calm such children and some children reportedly go off to sleep as early as 20 minutes after having this medicine. Though it is very commonly used to treat children with ADHD or bipolar disorder, ideally it should not be used for children under 18. The medication is not recommended to be used for such young people.
Also, some doctors may put the patients on a small dose of about 25 mg of Seroquel for ADHD while the others may be on a high dose of up to 800 mg also. This can have serious implications, to the extent of causing death in children.
There is a lot of information available on the internet about Seroquel and most of them suggest that Seroquel should be used for treating bipolar and schizophrenia, but it is not a treatment for ADHD. It should not be given even in mild doses to children less than 18 years of age.
