Ranitidine Acid Reflux In Infants

Ranitidine is used to treat acid reflux in infants. This drug comes under the brand name Zantac, and is available under prescription in all drug stores. Acid reflux is the regurgitation of acidic complexes found in the stomach.

There are two types of acid reflux in infants. One is GERD or gastroesophageal reflux disease, which is a recurring condition; and the other being GER or gastroesophageal reflux, which is a short term condition. The regurgitation happens by the backward flow of acidic complexes into the esophageal channel from out of the stomach, and thus resulting in a lot of discomfort. Infants find this to be a particularly uneasy condition and end up crying a lot with acidic sputum being ejected out of the mouth at periodic intervals. Infants fed with heavy and indigestible food, or subjected to inappropriate feeding times end up with acid reflux.

Ranitidine is an H-2 blocker, and particularly effective in the treatment of acid reflux in infants. However, certain precautions have to be kept in mind before putting an infant on a course of this drug. While a simple course of antacids could help alleviate the symptoms of acid reflux, it has been seen that Ranitidine is the most effective treatment available for infants.

Ranitidine is safe and effective in long term as well as short term therapeutic courses for infants. The side effects of Ranitidine are quite limited when the infant is prescribed very low dose by the doctor. Ranitidine is most recommended as a therapeutic adjuvant in the treatment of acid reflux in infants.
