How Long Does Rabies Vaccine Protection Last ?

Rabies is a fatal viral infection that invades the central nervous system and the brain. This infection can be passed on through contact with infected blood and saliva. A reason why most States mandate rabies vaccine is to prevent spread of the infection.

After the vaccine, the dog is given a tag to be added to the dog's collar. This signifies that the dog has received the vaccine. In the tag, the year it was given and the name of the veterinarian is included. It is required that this be worn by the dog at all times.

Out of the veterinary vaccines, the most potent of all is the rabies vaccine. Vaccines have been a controversial issue in the veterinary world. But of all the vaccines available, canine vaccines causes no controversy. Most laws dictate that dogs be given vaccination after their sixth week. There are also laws which mandate that the rabies vaccine be given upon three to six months of age. Boosters are then given at age one.

A rabies vaccine lasts for one year, although vaccines that last for three years are also available. There are laws that require annual vaccination. This is due to the fact that rabies can spread to humans; the public's health is one thing to prioritize. With the increased vaccination among dogs, there is a decrease in the exposure of humans to this hazardous disease. Laws are created for vaccination to protect humans from the spread of rabies since there are records of its fatality. In addition, it protects the dog in case it is bitten by raccoons or other wild animals that are carriers of the rabies virus.
