One can stop taking Prozac at any time during the course. Addiction is not a problem with Prozac. However, there are some withdrawal symptoms that can affect people. Since Prozac has very low chance of addiction it is normally not tapered off by the physician. This sudden elimination of the medicine from the system sometimes causes withdrawal symptoms.

The withdrawal symptoms are temporary and they go away after some time when one follows the doctor’s advice carefully. Prozac should not be taken as a regular pain killer without a doctor’s advice.

Some of the most common withdrawal symptoms experienced by people are tinnitus or ringing in the ears, aggression, confusion, fatigue, laziness and nervousness. Changes in mood are also very common along with teary eyes and dizziness. Migraines, irritability and sleep disturbances are also experienced by some patients.

There are several reasons for the patient to experience withdrawal symptoms. Prozac belongs to a group of drugs called the Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs). Though this sounds very complicated, it is just a medicine which controls serotonin to influence the cardiovascular functions, immune system and the gastrointestinal tract. It also regulates the body temperature, heart rate and blood pressure. On taking Prozac, serotonin is affected and therefore, all its functions can get misbalanced.

One should not stop taking Prozac without asking the doctor. The doctor usually prescribes some additional nutritional supplements to support the system before stopping Prozac. While tapering is not essential for Prozac, it might be necessary for some patients. Sudden elimination can result in worsening the symptoms.
