Prozac has some common, few uncommon and some severe side effects to it. The active ingredient in Prozac is fluoxetine hydrochloride. However, most of the side effects do not seem to manifest in all patients. In most cases, people who already have other underlying health conditions experience more side effects after taking Prozac.
Most people internalize Prozac pretty well. Minor side effects can be treated with home based remedies and physicians advice.
However, with any severe symptoms one needs to rush to the emergency room without delay. Any anti-depressant can cause severe complications without any warning. These complications can get worse if neglected. Some of the most common side effects of Prozac are insomnia, diarrhea, headaches, nervousness, fatigue and lack of appetite. In some patients there is a loss of weight and sense of anxiety along with dizziness. Prozac can cause impotence, sexual dysfunction and ejaculation problems in men.
These problems are more in patients with certain type of conditions like diabetes or heart conditions, and not all patients taking this medicine. Most of the symptoms go away in a couple of weeks after their system gets used to it. The uncommon and serious side effects of Prozac are redness in the skin, fever, hypertension, gastric troubles and changes in senses like taste and perception. These can be accompanied by chest pain and severe weight loss at a rapid pace. If one notices these serious symptoms progressing very fast, a doctor should be seen immediately. However, this can only happen if there is an overdose of the medication. It is unlikely for Prozac to cause fatal accidents when taken alone.
