Prednisone is a steroid based drug which is prescribed for various conditions. The most common chronic condition treated with this medicine is asthma. It is also used to treat inflammatory conditions like inflammatory bowel disease. This drug like any other steroid has many side effects.
The manifestation of the side effects depends on the underlying condition. So patients with different conditions manifest different side-effects. For example, with Irritable Bowel Syndrome, one could suffer from stomach aches and diarrhea on taking this medication.
Some of the most common side effects of Prednisone while treating different conditions are increase in appetite, dizziness, nervousness, sweating and stomach upset. Others common complains are indigestion, swelling in face and cheeks, change in skill color, pain in the joints and fainting. Other not so common symptoms are changes in vision, frequent urination, edema, increased thirsty, feeling of confusion, depression, restlessness, anxiety, hives and hallucinations.
Some cases of severe abdominal pain, headaches, pain in the eyes and swelling in the entire face, redness of eyes after taking prednisone is also seen. The many other side effects noticed are reddish and purple blotches on skin, weakness, fatigue, black stools, problems with periods, acne, burning sensation in the stomach and during urination, increased hair growth in legs and hands, rapid heart beat, bruising, changes in skin texture, rapid weight gain and wounds that do not heal. These symptoms and side-effects vary depending on the person’s condition. They may get better with time. Though prolonged usage causes severe long term effects in the patients.
