Prednisone is a Corticosteroid group of medication, used to treat chronic conditions like asthma. Asthma is a lung-related condition affecting millions of Americans. It can lead to fatal diseases like pneumonia in cold weather and flu season. Prednisone is also used to treat other conditions like Polymyaglia Rheumatica and Arthritis.
These chronic conditions are usually treated with steroids in order to control the symptoms for a longer period of time.
However, steroid has many adverse side effects. Some of which are common with all steroid based drugs. Prednisone is a strong painkiller and anti-inflammatory drug.
Prednisone can cause swelling in the facial tissues and tissues in the neck and arms. It looks like an allergic swelling but is actually a side effect of the drug. Bloating is a common side effect after taking the drug. Prednisone also causes swelling in the knees, joints and feet. These symptoms are very similar to the symptoms of edema. This problem of swelling is more common in patients who were suffering from chronic conditions like arthritis or fibromyalgia.
Prednisone is mainly used to treat asthma. It regulates the breathing and stops the airways from getting constricted. It is not widely used as a painkiller. In most cases, it is used as a combination drug to treat pain. In case one experiences welling in the tissues on taking this drug, one needs to stop taking the medication and call the doctor. It is advisable not miss more than three dosages of Prednisone. The doctor needs to prescribe other pain killers or steroids for the condition.
