Percocet is a potent narcotic pain killer. It binds to the pain receptors in the brain and stops them from being stimulated. This helps to stop any kind of pain immediately. The role of acetaminophen is to stop the prostaglandins from causing inflammation in the muscles, joints and tissues. Prostaglandin is a natural hormone produced by the immune system in response to injuries. Percocet is a common pain-killer in America.

When used for a prolonged period Percocet can have several side effects. It is a drug that functions exactly like Morphine. On prolonged usage, the drug can cause stomach ulcers and liver problems. Patients should refrain from consuming alcohol when taking this medication. Alcohol consumption can lead to serious complications while one is on Percocet.

This drug can cause severe damage to the liver. Percocet has high addictive properties, and that is why it should not be taken for more than two to three weeks. There can be additional indications when the liver is affected by the intake of this drug. Frequent stomach upsets or feeling nauseous are indications of liver damage, and the drug should be stopped immediately. Dark brown stools while taking this drug indicates bleeding of an internal organ. A doctor should be contacted immediately in such a situation. The doctor might stop the drug with immediate effect.
