Neurontin is an anti-epileptic drug. It is used to control the seizures in an epileptic person. Like any other epileptic drug even Neurontin has side effects. However, these side effects do not occur in everyone. The active ingredient in the drug is gabapentin and if you are allergic to this ingredient, then you should not take Neurontin.

Also, Neurontin does not suit people with kidney, liver and heart related conditions. In fact, it makes the symptoms worse for them and can lead to fatality if continued.

Neurontin functions by altering the chemicals in the brain. It is also being used to treat bipolar disorders. It controls the seizures by stabilizing the chemicals. However, the adverse effects can be a result of the chemical alterations.

Here are some of the common and uncommon side effects of the drug noticed in patients.

Common side effects of Neurontin are vision problems like blurred or double vision, fainting, dizziness, aches and pains, swelling in the hands and feet also known as edema, tiredness and weakness. These are the most common side effects. Due to these side effects, patients are requested not to drive soon after they take the medication.

Some of the side effects that are uncommon are diarrhea, frequent urination, and slurred speech, nausea, ringing in the ears, sleeplessness, weight gain, headaches, indigestion and dry mouth. The symptoms are rare but they do exist. Depression and irritability are less common also. It can rarely cause loss of memory.

Severe symptoms can occur only in the case of overdose.
