Neurontin is a drug that is used to treat epilepsy. It is categorized as an anti-epileptic and anticonvulsant medication. The main functionality of the drug is to affect the chemical reactions in the brain and control the seizures. It can also control pain related to the nerves.

Neurontin is sometimes combined with other form of medications to treat seizures in children and young adults.  The drug can be used to treat partial seizures in children who are 3 years to 12 years old. It can treat pain caused by shingles and herpes. However, the active ingredient in Neurontin is gabapentin. You cannot take this medication if you have any health complications related to kidney, heart or the liver.

Since Neurontin has been classified as an antiepileptic drug mainly, the side effects are related to the brain. It can cause severe side effects like increasing suicidal tendencies. The Food and Drug Administration of the United States has declared the drug safe for use for epileptic patients. However, the same cannot be said for pregnant women with epilepsy. The drug has the capability of affecting the fetus. Also, women, who are breast feeding, cannot take the drug as it gets passed on into the breast milk.
