When a comparison between Avandia and Lisinopril is done, a person will find out that the two medications are used for different purposes altogether. While Avandia is used to treat diabetes, Lisinopril is used to control elevated blood pressure. (See Reference 1 and 2)
Avandia is normally used to treat people suffering from Type 2 diabetes, which is the non-insulin dependent form diabetes. At times, some patients are given the medication that should be taken in combination with insulin or any other kind of medication. However, it is highly recommended that Avandia should not be taken along with insulin. (See Reference 1) The medication is taken orally by the person. It is not meant to treat Type 1 diabetes. Also, when a person is suffering from diabetic ketoacidosis, he or she should refrain from taking the medication. Instead the person's endocrinologist should be contacted to treat the person with the help of insulin. (See Reference 1)
As the medication can increase a person's risk to heart-related problem, like strokes or heart attack, only certain people suffering from Type 2 diabetes are prescribed this medication and that also when their blood sugar levels cannot be brought under control by other medications for diabetes. (See Reference 1)
It has been seen that some women restart their menstrual periods when taking Avandia after not getting their periods for several months due to an underlying health condition. (See Reference 1) In such cases, it is possible for the women to get pregnant and hence, they should consult their doctor and being taking some form of contraception. (See Reference 2) Also, women taking Avandia are more prone to fracture in the upper arms, hands and foot compared to men taking the same medication. So, women should consult their doctor about what can be done to avoid the risk of fractures. (See Reference 1) Women should not use Avandia when breastfeeding their babies. But during pregnancy, the medication is categorized as Class C drug by the US FDA as there is no scientific evidence available to show that it can adversely affect the growing fetus. If a woman realizes that she is pregnant while taking Lisinopril, she should immediately discontinue the use of the medication. Also, the medication should not be used by nursing mothers without checking with their doctors as there is no information available on the passage of the drug via breast milk to the infant.
On the other hand, when you look at Lisinopril, the medication is primarily used to treat elevated blood pressure and congestive heart failure. It is at times used to improve the survivability among patients who have recently had a heart attack. (See Reference 2) This medication is not suggested for women who are contemplating a pregnancy or are already pregnant as it can cause birth defects in the baby.
In addition, when a person is put on Lisinopril, he or she should ensure that they stay away from alcohol as it can dehydrate the body and cause the blood pressure to fall lower. This can exacerbate the side effects of the medication. Thos taking Lisinopril are often advised by the doctors not to use salt substitutes and/or potassium supplements. (See Reference 2) As the medication can result in vomiting, diarrhea and extreme sweating, it can lead to dehydration. Hence, people taking Lisinopril should ensure that they consume a lot of water throughout the day. (See Reference 2)
Some people are allergic to ACE inhibitors and hence they should not take this medication. When a person is suffering from certain health conditions such as kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, disease related to the connective tissue, or heart disease, the doctor will conduct some tests before prescribing the right dosage for the person. (See Reference 2)
