Januvia And Drop In Blood Pressure

Recently in September 2009, it was announced by the US Food and Drug Administration that patients taking Januvia to control Type 2 diabetes could face a high risk of developing pancreatitis. This has led to the FDA to update the prescription information for Januvia as 88 patients have reported pancreatitis, and this included two patients suffering from hemorrhagic pancreatitis or necrotizing pancreatitis.

The drug was approved by the FDA in October 2006 to treat patients with Type-2 diabetes who are unable to control their blood sugar levels by any other means. The medication has to be taken as prescribed by the doctor, which is normally after meals. Though, it can be taken with or without meals.

One of the symptoms of pancreatitis is low blood pressure along with acute abdominal pain radiating to the back, nausea, vomiting, and high respiratory rate or heart rate. Some patients could also suffer from high blood pressure.

It has been reported that out of the reported cases of pancreatitis, majority of them developed the condition within 30 days of starting the medication. However, when Januvia was stopped, around 53 percent of the cases of pancreatitis were resolved. Hemorrhagic pancreatitis and necrotizing pancreatitis are life-threatening conditions.

Patients should aware of the symptoms of pancreatitis so that they can immediately consult their doctor. This means closely monitoring any symptoms or side effects once you start taking Januvia. It is important to note that any change in blood pressure or symptoms mentioned above should be immediately reported to the doctor.
