Perhaps the worst part of a diarrhea bout is belching, bloating, pressure and cramps or passing of flatus. Belching and gas can be an embarrassing situation for the person experiencing gastric problems, and it can be equally embarrassing for those around. Imodium can help cure the symptoms of diarrhea, and the other related conditions commonly referred to as gas. |
Loperamide, the generic name for Imodium and simethicone, is an active ingredient in Imodium Multi-Symptom Relief. This medication could help relieve excess gas in the stomach. While loperamide actually helps ease the movement through the gastrointestinal tract, and retain or reabsorb more water, simethicone relieves the pressure caused by gastric problems. The anti-foaming or anti-bubbling properties found in simethicone work in the stomach and intestines, and help bind together the surface tension of gas and mucus bubbles. This coalescing action quickens the letting out of gas through belching or passing of flatus.
Imodium should not be administered in children suffering from dehydration, malnourishment or bloody diarrhea. Though generally considered safe, Imodium is recommended only for children over 3 years of age and suffering from diarrhea. However, caution is advised while administering Imodium in children as it is known to produce side effects, including rash, itching, hives, wheezing, cough and other such disorders.
It is not advisable to take Imodium if you are presently taking or have recently taken antibiotics for other health conditions. Also, it is better to avoid Imodium in cases where the diarrhea and related gastrointestinal disorders are caused by using antibiotics.
