Loperamide, the generic name for Imodium, can treat only the symptoms of diarrhea, and not the exact cause of it. If a person is already being administered antibiotics for infectious diarrhea or has other symptoms like high fever or blood in stool, Imodium should be avoided, and not be taken by the person. |
Similarly, this drug should be avoided if the person is suffering from diarrhea caused by the inflammation of the gut due to antibiotics. Generally, diarrhea caused by antibiotics could be a sign of new infection, and using Imodium during this stage is not advisable unless prescribed by the doctor.
In some cases, persistent diarrhea or stomach pain could occur even after the course of antibiotics is over. And, taking Imodium during this time could make things worse. Hence, it is better to avoid Imodium or any anti-diarrhea medication for some time after stopping the use of antibiotics. This will allow your system to return to normal, especially the stomach.
Diarrhea caused due to antibiotics could cause the stools to be tarry or bloody, and during these times it is better to avoid Imodium. Consult your physician if you have fever, liver diseases, or mucus is found in your stools. While using Imodium for diarrhea, which can make your body lose water leading to dehydration, drinking plenty of fluids and minerals is a must. It is equally important to consult your doctor when you experience irritation and stomach cramps or pain during the course of using Imodium for diarrhea.
