Folic acid is a form of water soluble Vitamin B9. It is of immense importance in body functions such as nucleotide biosynthesis and remethylation of homocysteine. Other functions of folic acid include rapid cell proliferation and growth, production of healthy red blood cells and much more. |
Folic acid is very important for pregnant women. It is found to be effective in reducing the levels of homocysteine, and thereby lowering the risks of cardiac diseases, strokes and blood clots. Another benefit is methotrexate toxicity that is an effective treatment for cancer.
Food sources that are rich in folic acid are red meat, yeast, green leafy vegetables and fresh fruits like banana, oranges and peaches. Since folic acid is so important for our healthy, let us take a look at the required dosages of this vitamin.
Age group Recommended Folate Dose
1-3 150 mcg/day
4-8 200 mcg/day
9-13 300 mcg/day
14 and above 400 mcg/day
Pregnant women 600 mcg/day
Breast feeding women 500 mcg/day
There are other factors that affect folic acid dosage. Women require higher folic acid dosage during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. However, care must be taken to ensure that only adequate levels of folic acid are taken. Excess folic acid is usually excreted through urine. Heavy long term dosage of folic acid may leads to problems such as digestive ailments, sleeping troubles, irritability, rashes, wheezing, itching, hyperactivity, bitter taste, and seizures among those who have a history of psychological problems.
High folic acid may hinder Vitamin B12 deficiency. It also increases the risk of cardiac problems. It is not advisable to take more than 1000 mcg folic acid per day. Doses higher than 1500 mcg may reduce or interfere in anticancer drug activity. An overdose of folic acid may result in the improper absorption of zinc, estrogen, barbiturates and anticonvulsant drugs.
