Most people take Benadryl to combat their allergies. So, why not give it to their best friends -- their dogs? You will, however, have to take the weight of the dog into consideration before giving the medication. You can give approximately 1 mg per pound of the dog’s weight.
You can also give Benadryl in capsule format. The capsules come in 25 mg strengths. The dosage is higher than for humans, but you need to give this amount for the medication to be effective. Repeat the dose after a gap of 8 hours.
One must be aware that a dog’s physiology is different than a human’s. So, what agrees with us may not agree with animals. Keep a close eye on your dog after administering a dose of Benadryl. If the dog starts showing adverse symptoms like irregular breathing or swelling, discontinue use of the medication as your dog might be allergic to benadryl. Take the dog to the vet immediately.
Benadryl has been known to relieve dogs from itching, motion sickness when you take them for car rides, insect bites and stings, and even after giving them vaccinations to prevent side effects of the vaccines. As Benadryl can soothe and put one to sleep, you can give your dog a mild dose to help it sleep under certain conditions.
Also, Benadryl has a high alcohol level in it. So, do not give it often as it might harm the dog’s overall health.
However, it is always better to have the opinion of an expert, and in the case of your dog, do not hesitate to consult a good vet.
