Ativan is a generic drug and derivative of Lorazepam. It is used to treat anxiety and is used as an anti-anxiety medication. Some doctors also use it as a mild form of sedative to treat bipolar disorders. Like every other drug even Ativan has some side effects. If you have been prescribed Ativan, then there are some side effects you should watch out for.

The side effects from Ativan are as follows:

• People may start feeling clumsy due to dizziness, tiredness, light headedness and slurred speech
• Some people also have reported stomach and abdominal cramps soon after taking the drug
• It seemed to affect vision and alter the eye sight
• Feeling tired and weak
• On the other hand, an elevated sense of well being
• Alteration in sexual instincts
• Increased bronchitis
• Anxiety and depression are lesser known symptoms

If people start experiencing these symptoms, it is normal. If they start feeling uncomfortable, then they should probably reduce the dosage and talk to their doctor about it. Ativan is considered to be a safe drug by the Food and Drug Administration of the United States. It is not known to cause any type of fatalities. There are some known withdrawal side effects also for the drug.
 

Some of the withdrawal symptoms are irritability, nervousness and sleeplessness. Every physician advices a gradual decrease in medications.

In case of an overdose, you should immediately contact the doctor or emergency room. Typical symptoms are breathlessness, slow reflexes and unconsciousness. Some also slip into coma or may show extreme weakness.
